LEARN-ABOUT & HEAR-A-TUNE!
About a century ago, the go-to spot in Chicago was "The Stroll." It was on south State Street and crowded with cabarets, vaudeville theaters, and dance palaces; these were the backdrop for fast-paced nightlife by the elite. Beginning in 1912, popular musicians from New Orleans made inroads. "Jelly Roll" Morton came initially, then Sidney Bechet, Freddie Keppard, and Joe "King" Oliver who recruited Louie Armstrong. By 1918, many great Dixieland bands thrilled patrons in clubs like The DeLuxe, Dreamland and The Royal Garden. In 1919, Clarence Williams and Spencer Williams (no relation) wrote the tune "Royal Garden Blues." To hear and enjoy the KC Dixieland Band play a rendition: CLICK HERE
